Teledyne Brown Engineering Launches Target Missile at International Event

8/20/2021

Huntsville, AL – August 20, 2021 - Teledyne Brown Engineering, announced that it recently carried out another successful launch of a Zombie target missile for the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) Technical Center’s Targets Division. The Zombie target is a part of Teledyne’s Tactical Range Air Defense Missile (TACRAM) contract under which the team designs and builds affordable, flexible target missiles to be used for testing advanced missile defense systems.

This is the ninth successful launch for the Teledyne Brown Engineering target missile family. The launch occurred on May 19 from the Hebrides launch facility in the United Kingdom for the At Sea Demonstration/Formidable Shield 2021 (ASD/FS21) Exercise. ASD/FS21 is an international exercise organized and executed by the U.S. SIXTH Fleet, Missile Defense Agency, and the U.S. Navy’s Program Executive Office for Integrated Warfare Systems. It is aimed at International Interoperability and building a layered NATO defense against advanced threats. In addition to the United States, other NATO allies participating included Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

The target launched was the single-stage Zombie Pathfinder, a realistic ballistic threat. The Zombie is one of four target missile configurations developed by Teledyne’s TACRAM program.

“We are excited to participate in this exercise demonstrating international cooperation to protect NATO forces and populations from the threat of ballistic missiles,” stated Jan Hess, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering. “Our work, together with SMDC, has allowed us to provide effective, low-cost targets to prove interoperability in sophisticated and complex air and missile defense exercises.”

Teledyne Brown Engineering’s TACRAM program enables Army and Missile Defense programs to achieve reduced costs of test and evaluation efforts for missile defense assets. Currently, there have been 10 target missiles delivered with ongoing orders being manufactured. The TACRAM contract is active through April 2025.
