Teledyne Brown Engineering Performing Satellite Ground Station Installation

12/29/2016

HUNTSVILLE, AL - December 29, 2016 - Teledyne Brown Engineering has been contracted by NASA to conduct the installation and set-up of the ground station for the ESP Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series (GOES-R) now in orbit.  The company and its partner, Enterprise Electronics Corporation (EEC), are installing a high-performance Ground Station which is a turnkey system that receives and processes data from the GOES-R Meteorological Satellite. This system is designed to ingest the real-time data stream from all six instruments flown on the GOES-R.  The system includes the 6 meter dish antenna, acquisition workstations, high-speed data processing workstations, and visualization workstations which will allow NASA scientists to fully utilize the capabilities of the new GOES-R satellite.

The satellite launched on November 19, 2016 on ULA’s Atlas 5 rocket, and was deployed to collect environmental sensor data, weather information, and detect and locate signals from emergency beacons onboard marine vessels, aircraft and handheld personal locator beacons.  It has the ability to scan the western hemisphere faster than existing satellites with increased resolution across multiple spectral bands.

“The GOES-R mission offers vast new capabilities and speeds compared to previous weather satellites,” stated Jan Hess, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering.  “We are excited to be supporting this revolutionary new technology, and look forward to supporting future efforts as the programs evolves.”

The GOES-R satellite recently reached its prescribed orbit location, which triggered its designation to be changed.  The system will now be referred to as GOES-16 and is currently undergoing a checkout and validation of its instruments.
