Teledyne Brown Engineering working with HUNCH students to fabricate SLS hardware


HUNTSVILLE, AL - May 23, 2016 - Teledyne Brown Engineering hosted 14 students from the Earnest Pruett Center of Technology (EPCOT) in Hollywood, AL, in April to view the finished hardware they built for the Launch Vehicle Stage Adapter (LVSA) program. This effort is part of the High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware (HUNCH) Program, an educational outreach effort to provide curriculum to motivate and challenge students to continue studies that may lead to work supporting NASA programs. The opportunity lets students see how specific knowledge and skills are applied in the work place to produce space related hardware and software to meet real world requirements.

Teledyne Brown Engineering is the prime contractor responsible for the design and fabrication of the LVSA for the world's most powerful rocket, NASA's Space Launch System (SLS).

The LVSA will connect the rocket's 27.5-foot diameter core stage to the 16.4-foot diameter Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS). In addition to providing structural support for launch and separation loads, LVSA will also protect the delicate electrical devices in the propulsion systems from extreme conditions encountered in the challenging launch environment.

The EPCOT group was selected by HUNCH to fabricate the LVSA Lifting Door Proof Load Test Fixture, which will be used for load testing of the LVSA Lifting Doors prior to use on the Structural Test Article (STA) and Flight Unit. During lifting, a crane attaches to the LVSA items using four lifting cables that are attached to the LVSA Lifting Doors. Each Lifting Door is required to support 2,500 pounds. To meet safety requirements, the Lifting Doors must be load tested to a minimum of two times their rated load, or 5,000 pounds. The total assembled mass of the Lifting Test Fixture is approximately 6,000 pounds, with an extra margin of 1,000 lbs.

The load testing of the LVSA lifting doors was successfully performed on February 10 of this year.
