Teledyne Decontamination System Activated on Space Station

6/13/2014

HUNTSVILLE, AL - June 13, 2014 - Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc. and NASA today marked the successful activation of a decontamination system the company designed and manufactured for the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG), an enclosed laboratory onboard the International Space Station (ISS). This system is designed to assure the safety for crew members conducting experiments in the MSG and brings a new capability to perform biological science research.

The decontamination system utilizes high-power, ultraviolet, light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs) from Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (SETi) that were developed in part through the DARPA Compact Mid-Ultraviolet Technology program. The UV LEDs decontaminate the MSG before and after experiments are conducted. The system sanitizes surfaces and filters out airborne contaminants inside the MSG in a matter of minutes. The MSG, developed by NASA and the European Space Agency, is operated by NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center and supported by Teledyne Brown flight controllers.

"We're pleased to be able to deliver a system that creates a safer environment to conduct life sciences research," said Jan Hess, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc. "The results of these studies could lead, for example, to enhanced treatment of infectious diseases and insight into protecting the health of astronauts on long-term space missions."

As part of the decontamination system, Teledyne Brown also designed and manufactured a filtration system that removes biological and chemical contaminants from the air circulation system and an exchangeable glove system that was redesigned to be better suited for life sciences research onboard the ISS.
