Teledyne’s MUSES Platform Achieves Full Operating Capability

10/3/2017

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – October 3, 2017 – Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY) announced that Teledyne Brown Engineering’s Multi-User System for Earth Sensing (MUSES) aboard the International Space Station (ISS) has achieved full operating capability (FOC).

MUSES was developed as part of a cooperative agreement with NASA to  create opportunities for both Government and Commercial applications such as imaging, technology demonstration, and space qualification payloads supporting research, scientific studies, and humanitarian efforts.  MUSES provides a precision-pointing environment on the ISS for earth-viewing instruments, such as high-resolution digital cameras and hyperspectral imagers.  It can accommodate up to four payloads simultaneously and offers the ability to robotically change, upgrade, and service those instruments.

The first payload on MUSES will be a hyperspectral imager developed in cooperation with the German Aerospace Agency (DLR).  The spectrometer will have a ground sampling distance of 30m, a spectral range of 400-1000nm and sampling of 235 bands at 2.55nm.  DLR will use the acquired imagery for scientific investigation while Teledyne will market both tasked and archived hyperspectral imagery to Commercial and Government customers.  The instrument will launch in early 2018 and is expected to be operational in the second half of 2018.

“We are very pleased that MUSES has met all performance criteria and achieved Full Operating Capability.  Leveraging the infrastructure of the International Space Station, Teledyne can now offer a cost-effective alternative to small satellites for Low Earth Orbit missions,” said Robert Mehrabian, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Teledyne.

The MUSES platform is ideal for both long-term operational instruments and short-duration technology demonstrations including space hardware qualification.  The unique ability to return payloads to earth allows for post-mission analysis and preservation of investment through reuse of instruments and payload canisters.  Now that the platform is fully operational, Teledyne Brown Engineering is focused on streamlining the payload integration process to reduce the time required to launch.  “The reuse of canisters will reduce the time to have hosted payloads on-orbit to less than 12 months,” said Jan Hess, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering.  “We are committed to offering our customers competitive pricing and the fastest path to Low Earth Orbit.”
