HUNTSVILLE, AL - May 31, 2019 - NASA recently certified Kaila Myrick as a Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) Facility Operator. Kaila was the first student from Alabama State University (ASU) and the second flight controller to obtain certification as a part of a Mentor Protégé Agreement (MPA) between Teledyne Brown Engineering and ASU. The MPA was signed under Teledyne Brown Engineering’s Mission Operations and Integration (MO&I) Contract and allows the University and students participating in the program to receive assistance in developing multi-media training for the International Space Station (ISS) Payload Ground Support Personnel and Payload Developers. This agreement began on July 27, 2015.
“Kaila started working on our contract as a student Co-op and we were happy to offer her a full-time position upon her graduation in the fall of 2015. An excellent employee from the start, she started on our Space Launch System support team. Kaila continued to grow in the role and traveled to other NASA Centers representing the contract. When we needed additional support on our MSG team, we asked Kaila if she was up for an additional challenge. She has spent the past six months training on the ISS ground system at the Payload Operations Support Facility to reach her certification goal as an MSG Facility Operator. This training includes classroom time, written and oral tests, on-the-job training, console support simulations, and a final burn in on console. Her efforts are commendable and we are pleased to have her on our team,” stated David Provancha, Teledyne Brown Engineering Mission Operations and Integration Program Manager.
The ISS certification allows Kaila to be responsible for real-time command and control support for the MSG. As an MSG Facility Operator, Kaila will provide real-time console support, problem recognition/resolution, and near real-time facility data reduction for all payloads in the MSG. Additionally, Kaila will be responsible for MSG laptop computer disk management and ground data archival of all MSG Facility and Investigation data.
