Teledyne Brown Engineering Supporting SUBSA Operations on the ISS from Huntsville Alabama

6/14/2018

Huntsville, AL- June 14, 2018 - Teledyne Brown Engineering has refurbished the Solidification Using a Baffle in Sealed Ampoules (SUBSA) furnace experiment for NASA which is now prepared to begin active operations on-board the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory.  SUBSA is a microgravity furnace that can process science ampoules at precision controlled temperatures up to 850°C.

SUBSA was launched on Orbital ATK’s CRS-7 in April 2017 and operations began Tuesday, May 29, 2018.  Teledyne Brown Engineering will support astronauts performing experiment setups in the Microgravity Science Glovebox from the company’s Tele-Science Center (TSC) in Huntsville, AL. The TSC represents one of the company’s actions to further its participation in the commercialization of space. This will allow Teledyne Brown Engineering to control the experiments throughout the life of the tests being performed.

“Considerable advancements in technology and science have been achieved and continue to develop from space and the International Space Station,” stated Jan Hess, President of Teledyne Brown Engineering.  “Our company has participated in many of these programs and will continue our support to aid NASA, the science community and industry to help further innovation.”

The SUBSA hardware supports HD video observations into transparent gradient zone when using quartz ampoules, which is typically not achievable by most furnaces.  SUBSA is designed for gradient freeze processing of solidification experiments, and can also process vapor deposition experiments.  The tests being conducted in the furnace are designed to promote developments of semiconductor materials for electronic devices and radiation monitoring methods used by agencies such as the Department of Homeland Security.

“Teledyne Brown Engineering is a trusted partner in advancing the mission of CASIS and the ISS U.S. National Laboratory,” stated Ken Shields, Director of Operations of CASIS. “We enthusiastically await the results of these important SUBSA experiments and we thank Teledyne Brown Engineering for their contibutions.”
