Teledyne Brown Names Fuentes 2013 Engineering Fellow

12/12/2012

HUNTSVILLE, AL - December 12, 2012 – Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc. today named Roland Fuentes Jr. as the Engineering Fellow for 2013. Fuentes was selected for this prestigious honor for the significant technical contributions he made in signature management, chemical/biological demilitarization, instrumentation and testing, optics and infrared technologies.

The designation of Fellow is the highest technical honor Teledyne Brown bestows. In order to qualify for this distinction, an employee or former employee must have demonstrated exceptional technical achievements in the field of science and engineering. During his more than 30-year career, Fuentes developed a reputation as an excellent troubleshooter whose innovative solutions earned him the nickname "Miracle Worker."

"Roland Fuentes is one of those rare engineers who can analyze a complex problem and develop unconventional yet effective solutions," said Rex D. Geveden, President, Teledyne Brown Engineering. "His technical range was very impressive and included development of hazardous materials handling systems, detectors for medical devices, and infrared target simulators among others. We congratulate Roland as he fittingly joins this elite group."

Fuentes made major contributions to the design, fabrication and operation of special test circuits and fixtures to support and conduct Tank Gunnery Simulation Testing. He used a forced air method for heating materials to create infrared signatures for two-dimensional tank targets. This unique method enabled the signatures to maintain proper levels even in strong winds. These targets were recognized for their fidelity and ability to look like the vehicle they were simulating.

He also developed controls and sequencing of events to the Punch and Drain Machine for Teledyne Brown's Binary Destruction Facility. His solution punched a hole in the canister, removed hazardous material, and cleaned the canister without exposing operators to hazardous material.

Fuentes was an integral part of the IR&D efforts at Teledyne Brown to produce large crystal sodium iodide material for medical scanners. He was tasked with pressing or flattening the large sodium iodide crystal material after extraction from the furnace and succeeded using a large hydraulic press and controlling it with PLC circuits to slowly press the material into a rectangular billet.

Modern day decoy and camouflage materials exist in part due to Fuentes' development of a method to create ultra-light, large camouflage patterns. He designed, fabricated and tested a large Blackbody Calibration Source for IR field testing.

He was also a significant contributor to the Special Technology and Material Program (STAMP), which involved disassembly and assembly of foreign missile assets, static test firing of the system, design and fabrication of control circuits for the system and system instrumentation.

Fuentes is the 22nd Fellow to be named since the program's inception in 2004. He is a member of the 10th class of Fellows. He received a Fellows pin and plaque during a company awards ceremony today. A duplicate plaque will be displayed in the Fellows Hall of Fame at the company.
